The Forgotten Garden

The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton A little girl thinks she is playing a game with her friend “The Authoress”, however, she soon finds herself all alone on a ship bound for Australia from England. When she arrives she sits alone on the dock … waiting … seemingly with no memory of her life before getting off the ship. The harbormaster takes pity on her and takes her home, where he and his wife raise her as their own. On the occasion of her 18th birthday he feels he must tell her the truth how she came to be part of his family.

Although nothing has changed in her family’s feelings, she feels suddenly different and alienates herself from all those she loves. Fast forward to a visit from her grand-daughter, who discovers a strange book of fairy tales hidden away is a little white suitcase … and thus the story begins to unfold. The reader is taken seamlessly back and forth between past and present to unravel the mystery of the little girl, the woman she became and the mysterious “authoress” who seems to be at the center of it all.

A good read that kept me turning the pages.
